Sustainability
Recycling
Square One is equipped with 10 compactors that recycle cardboard, paper, bottles, cans, and plastics. The centre has also expanded to four-stream bins to divert organics, paper, recycling, and waste. In 2024, Square One diverted 3,202.61 tons of material from landfill.
Bicycle Parking Stations
Bicycle stands are located at the following entrances: 1, 7, 8 and The Food District. Additional bicycle stands can be found at the P1 parking deck, near Simons, Whole Foods and Crate & Barrel.
Solar Panels
Square One features one of the GTA’s largest rooftop solar arrays, with over 2,200 panels across 152,000 square feet, helping supply clean, renewable energy and reduce emissions. This investment supports long-term sustainability and lowers the centre’s environmental footprint.
Water Management
Square One uses water-saving technologies, including 39 waterless urinals that save over 19.25 million litres of water annually. Water-efficient fixtures on approximately 150 faucets use up to 70% less water, conserving an estimated 1.8 million litres each year.
Rooftop Beehives
Square One hosts a rooftop beehive with urban beekeeping partner Alvéole, supporting pollination, biodiversity, and neighbourhood greening within a 5 km radius.
Sustainability Awards
Square One is proud to be recognized for its ongoing commitment to sustainability, environmental stewardship, and meaningful greening initiatives.
