This book is a celebration of love, culture, and tradition, showcasing how events and gatherings can reflect and enhance our personal and cultural narratives. This edition is a tribute to the joy of coming together and the artistry behind event design. Discover the intricate history of the Kwan Kwa in Chinese culture, which was the inspiration for the cover design. We hand-illustrated iconic symbolism and composed our own unique fabric, which was then beautifully embossed in gold to mimic the actual sparkle on golden threading in real life garments. The intricate beading and threads were individually created with strokes of ink and colour, weaving the dimension texture on paper.

TRU Headings With Description Block

Celebrating the exquisite art of Chinoiserie. This decorative style, which blends Chinese and Western elements, was highly popular in Europe from the 17th to the 19th centuries. The cover art reflects this rich fusion, illustrating how Chinese culture continues to thrive and evolve in contemporary applications. Inspiration takes off from the historic context of Chinoiserie: its history and artifacts beautifully explained in words and images by Waddingtons; the stunning hand-crafted chinoiserie wallpapers of a renowned British atelier de Gournay that have had transformative impact on interior design; and the intricate floral details in the jewellery design of traditional Chinese studio Yewn.

Edition 6: Time + Tempo 2021

TRU Headings With Description Block

“The days are long, but the years are short.” Amidst the global pandemic, Edition 6 reflects on the profound shift in our perception of time, as our once fast-paced lives come to a halt. An abstracted tourbillon in blue and white porcelain, meticulously crafted using thousands of strokes of a blue ballpoint pen, symbolises the slowed process of creation amidst chaos and modern pace. Gold-debossed details feature Chinese lyrics from superstar Eason Chan’s song “陀飛輪” evoke a sense of affirmation, rhythm and introspective spirit in the face of uncertainty. Together, these elements capture the essence of Edition 6, inviting readers to contemplate the passage of time and its impact on our lives.

“The trees we sit under today are the ones someone planted years ago. What we leave behind will be the shade for someone else to grow.”

Edition 5: Dreams Take Flight 2020

TRU Headings With Description Block

The 5th Edition’s cover artwork resembles a piece of exquisite Jade that is carved with intricate details. The intention behind the design was to capture a modern day dreamscape inspired by billowing scroll paintings of mountain and water, transporting readers into a fantastical wonderland of cultural delight. All hand-illustrated in fine pencil work, the tapestry invites you down the rabbit hole of adventure, as the eye discovers moments that are distinctively unique, and represents the journeys and aspirations of numerous Big Dreamers among us. A stork is at once a ballet shoe; a brand of peach blossoms from a cake; a Toronto building is nestled in the mountains; a local film crew is shooting a scene; and a porcelain vase pops up for a cameo. The slight ombre from light to darker jade tones embraces both tradition and heritage of feicui jade sculptures as well as contemporary colourways made possible with technology and digital outputs, complete with the touch of Fête Chinoise’s signature use of gold.

“I just had a dream and put myself into as many situations as possible to achieve opportunities.”

Edition 4: The Language of Legacy 2019

TRU Headings With Description Block

We are all empowered by language and legacy. Celebrating the richness of cultural heritage, the 4th Edition showcases exquisite stories of culture materialised into visual forms of language, bridging traditional and contemporary values. The colourful cover integrates the Thousand Word Poem in seal script, written by the masterful brush of Canadian Chinese artist Master Shan Bai-Qin with an abstraction of a Chinese embroidered silk fabric. Inside the book, a special chapter also echoes the art on the cover in a visual duet with vibrant coloured contemporary compositions of classic calligraphy by Canadian artist Debbie Mak. The interplay of art reflects the endless conversation that language has to offer. This combination of classical and modern styles underscores the ongoing dialogue between past and present, in which we consider, situate, and define our legacy.

“If these perspectives aren’t shared, then there is a limited depth of connection between cultural heritage and the Canadian story.”

— Bernice Liu

Edition 3: Luck & Ritual 2017/18

TRU Headings With Description Block

Deep diving into stories and Chinese mythology behind the concepts of luck and rituals, the cover of this edition is packed with rich symbolism. Icons and imagery associated with auspiciousness, traditions and celebrations from Chinese culture were illustrated in pencil and coloured in a seductive palette of merlots, magentas, pink, and gold. The art portrays an exuberant and eclectic dance of visual elements, many of which second generation Chinese-Canadians commonly grew up being surrounded by, oftentimes without ever really understanding the history or the meaning. Every element draws the eye to look more closely, piquing our curiosities and inventing the mind to consider what it all might mean to us personally, today.

“We are more than the sum of our parts and our voices and stories deserve to be heard.”

The cover is adorned with hand-illustrated flowers, inspired by a beautiful vintage set of porcelain planters that belong to Mrs. Rose Yue. Presented in a vibrant colour palette, the design is a contemporary expression that seamlessly blends oriental influences with modern design elements that speak to anyone who loves beauty.

“If you can tell the story of the worst thing that has ever happened to you, you’ll never be silenced.”

The Inaugural 2015

TRU Headings With Description Block

The Inaugural Fête Chinoise magazine was born alongside the Fête Chinoise exhibition, a gathering of Toronto’s finest event designers and artists, showcasing the essence of “Chinese-Canadian” culture. The cover featured layered brush-strokes of the Fête Chinoise logo, which was created by Deborah, Founder + Editor-in-Chief using her own traditional Chinese paintbrush, stone-ground ink and rice paper. Remarkably, the English characters take on a unique visual aesthetic when done with the spirit of writing Chinese characters by brush. The design is meant to be free, not precious – graffiti-like in the same moment that it is prestigiously patterned.

“All the dedicated work to modernize and beautify the perception here of Chinese culture will help to elevate the image for our next generation growing up here in Canada.”

You’ll often spot it in the windows of people’s homes, on bumper stickers, pins, blowing in the wind on flag poles in addition to apparel like t-shirts and backpacks. Gilbert Baker Pride Flag

Gilbert Baker Pride Flag

Traditional Pride Flag

Traditional Pride Flag

TRU Headings With Description Block

Designed by drag queen Gilbert Baker and dye artist Lynn Segerblom—at the urging of Harvey Milk (one of the first openly gay officials appointed to public office in the U.S.)—the original Pride flag debuted in 1978 at San Francisco’s Gay Freedom Day Parade. This first iteration of the flag (also known as the Gilbert Baker Pride Flag) had eight colours on it with each shade representing its own meaning. Shortly after the flag’s debut, two of the eight colours were dropped from the design (hot pink and turquoise, due to difficulties in manufacturing those shades) to reveal the six coloured flag that’s commonly used today.

While the six striped Pride Flag is often used to represent LGBTQIA2S+ individuals, there are now multiple flags that specifically represent different groups within the community.

Read on to learn more and visit Yorkdale’s Atrium where the flags will be proudly on display beginning June 1st!

The pink stripe is for attraction to the same gender, blue for the attraction to a different gender, and the purple represents attraction to two or more genders.

Lesbian pride flag

Lesbian Pride Flag

This Pride Flag was created in 1999 by graphic designer Emily Gwen. Her goal was to create a symbol for the lesbian community. This flag has seven horizontal stripes: three stripes of gradient red and orange, one stripe of white and three stripes of gradient pink. The shades of orange represent gender non-conformity and community, the white stripe represents unique relationships to womanhood, while the shades of pink are for serenity, peace and femininity.

transgender pride flag

Transgender Pride Flag

Transgender activist and US Navy Veteran Monica Helms created this Transgender Flag in 1999. She created the flag—consisting of five horizontal stripes of blue, pink, white, pink, blue—as a symbol to celebrate and empower transgender people, including the diversity within the community and the rights that transgender folks are still fighting for. The light pink and light blue stripes represent traditional colours for male and female and the white stripe is for those transitioning, are intersex or are non-binary.

pansexual pride flag

Pansexual Pride Flag

Graphic artist Jasper Vardey created the Pansexual Pride Flag in 2010 as he wanted to create a standalone symbol for the pansexuality community. You can spot this flag by its three horizontal stripes in pink, yellow and blue. Just like the Polysexual Pride Flag with pink and blue representing attraction to those who identify as female and male, the yellow stripe is for attraction regardless of gender.

asexual pride flag

Asexual Pride Flag

First introduced in 2010 by a group of asexual activists, this Pride Flag was created to empower the asexual community. Consisting of four horizontal stripes in black, grey, white, and purple, black represents asexuality, gray is for the grey area between asexuality and sexuality, white for sexuality and lastly, the purple stripe represents community.

genderqueer pride flag

Genderqueer Pride Flag

First introduced in 2011 by genderqueer activist Marilyn Roxie, the Genderqueer Pride Flag was created to represent those who identify as a combination of genders or who have a gender that is outside the traditional male and female binary. genderfluid pride flag

Genderfluid Pride Flag

In 2012, genderfluid activist JJ Poole first introduced the Genderfluid Pride Flag. It was created to celebrate people who have a gender identity that is not fixed and can fluctuate in different circumstances and/or over time. This flag has five stripes in colours of pink, white, purple, black and blue and each one represents a different part of the genderfluid community. Pink is for femininity, white for neutrality, purple for a combination of male and female genders, black for the absence of gender and blue for masculinity.

polysexual pride flag

Polysexual Pride Flag

In 2012, Tumblr user Samlin created the Polysexual Flag, and it was introduced to differentiate polysexuality from bisexuality and pansexuality. This flag has three horizontal stripes in pink, green and blue. Pink represents attraction to female-identifying people, the blue for attraction to those who identify as male, and the green stripe is for attraction to people who identify as non-binary or other genders.

intersex pride flag

Intersex Pride Flag

This Intersex Pride Flag was designed by intersex activist and organization founder Morgan Carpenter in 2013. This flag was created to empower the intersex community which consists of people who are born with reproductive traits or sexual anatomy that are outside of the male-female binary. There have been changes made to the Intersex Flag over the years, but this version is yellow with the outline of a purple circle on it—two colours that are seen as gender neutral.

nonbinary pride flag

Nonbinary Pride Flag

The Nonbinary Flag was created in 2014 by nonbinary activist Kye Rowan to represent people who don’t identify with either binary gender or those who don’t identify within the binary in general. The black and white stripes represent the absence of gender, the grey stripes are for those who are semi-genderless, and the green stripe represents non-binary folks.

bigender pride flag

Bigender Pride Flag

Currently, there are multiple variations of the Bigender Pride Flag. This flag, created in 2014 by Tumblr user ‘no-bucks-for-this-doe,’ is one of the more commonly used versions. It represents those who identify with two genders, whether that’s male and female or outside of the gender binary. This flag has seven horizontal stripes in two shades of pink, two stripes in one shade of purple, one of white and two shades of blue. While there’s currently no written explanation to explain what each colour means, it is widely thought that the pink and blue stripes represent the feelings of identity, the top purple stripe is for good relationships, the white stripe is for unique bigender experiences, and the bottom purple stripe is for pride.

The two-spirit pride flag

The Two-Spirit Pride Flag

This flag represents Indigenous American that identity as two-spirit individuals meaning they fall outside of the M-F binary. Unbothered, bold, and authentic with Ashkan & Roham Hobian.

Yorkdale is proud to collaborate with Ashkan and Roham, the Hobian brothers, to explore how they blend fashion, storytelling, vulnerability, personality, and Pride into their unique creative journey.

In our Q&A, we sat down with Ashkan and Roham to discuss how individuality and fearless self-expression shape their work, alongside the brands that champion their vision, including Aesop, Nespresso, and COS. Their honest conversation reveals how vulnerability and creativity combine to inspire confidence and inclusion.

Q: Describe your style in 3 words:

Ashkan: Unbothered
Roham: Unbothered, bold and authentically ourselves.

TRU Image Collage

Q: What’s one fashion rule you love breaking:

Roham: Definitely mixing masculinity and feminity.
Ashkan: We like taking more of a structured top and mixing with something more romantic in the bottom, like a flowy pant. I think COS gets it.

TRU Image Collage

Q: What makes you feel the most confident:

Roham: Like something black head-to-toe…
Ashkan: We all know how much you love wearing black. Freshly caffeinated confidence hits differently. Thank you, Nespresso!

TRU Image Collage

Q: How has pride shaped your style and confidence?

Ashkan: I think pride has permitted us to not ask for permissions anymore.
Roham: It’s also about owning who you are fully. I don’t think it’s always all about the rainbows…
Ashkan: But it is. Like the lineup of Aesop hand and body balms.

Q: What is your last message for pride this year?

Ashkan: Be soft. Be loud. Be weird. And whatever version feels most like you, that’s pride.
Roham: Don’t perform your confidence. Build it, wear it, and never return it.
Ashkan: And if you don’t know where to begin, Yorkdale has got you covered.
Roham: Verbatim.
Ashkan: Verbatim.

5 Spring Trends We’re Coveting Now

Fresh fashion inspiration ahead.

A new season is upon us, and so is a fresh vision for everyday dressing. After scouring the spring runways for the very best inspiration, here, we name the five standout trends to build your seasonal wardrobe around.

TRU Image Collage

The Trend: Actually-Chic Athleisure

Whether you’re an athletic achiever or someone who’s content on cheering from the stands, this sporty-leaning trend is for you: cool track suits, beautiful ballet-inspired separates, and boxer-inspired sneakers are set to be a slam dunk in the style space.

TRU Image Collage

The Trend: Fanciful Florals

Zero surprise here: the spring runways were replete with covetable flower motifs. From magic-eye-like micro florals to three-dimensional blossoms that crept across garments, there’s no doubt this season is in full bloom.

TRU Image Collage

The Trend: Slick Suiting

You don’t need a buttoned-up office job to partake in this impeccably tailored trend: oversized blazers, wide-leg trousers, and crisp collared shirts help take smart suiting beyond the boardroom and into the street style realm.

TRU Image Collage

The Trend: Pretty Pastels

Petal pinks, powder blues and vanilla-tinged yellows were the ultra-soft palette of the season. But instead of leaning into the shades’ super-sweet undertones, designers took a more polished, grown-up approach, one that was primed for everyday wear.

The Trend: By the Sea

Across the runway spectrum, nautical nods cemented a classic French Riviera sensibility on our style moodboards. Tap into the coastal cool aesthetic with marinière tops, breezy linens, and dark denim, all brought together by classic nautical hues.
