A year of wisdom, charisma and transformation.

Celebrating the Spring Festival in a traditional way has always been meaningful to me. Even after living in Toronto for over 16 years, it’s a tradition I eagerly anticipate—a celebration that feels like home away from home.

The Year of the Snake is associated with charisma, wisdom, and transformation. People born in this year are believed to embody traits such as intelligence, grace, mystery, and elegance.

My family and I have always believed that celebrating the Spring Festival in the proper way helps ensure that all our best wishes come true. I’m especially excited this year, as it holds all the symbols I look forward to.

For Lunar New Year, we gather as a family to enjoy dumplings and wear red to welcome good fortune. No matter how old I become, this tradition remains meaningful. It’s the perfect time to share love with those I care about, offering red envelopes and sweet gifts in the spirit of the season.

During last Spring Festival, I treated my mom to a facial, giving us the opportunity to relax and recharge before making delicious handmade dumplings together. The dumplings she makes are absolutely the best, and I look forward to spending more of these special moments with her.

For a celebratory meal, we are making the traditional dishes like char siu, fish, long-life noodles, and of course, dumplings, to share our best wishes with each other. There will also be mahjong (a traditional Chinese tile-based game, typically played by four players, involving strategy, skill, and a bit of luck) and red envelope exchanges for a fun-filled night.

I think a lot about how others perceive me in terms of feminity, approachability, success, and more, along with how Canadian and American history has shaped such perceptions. For my own sake of experiencing joy and self-love, I also create work that celebrates all the uniqueness of Black and Queer individuals or media, as a way to normalize non-restrictive images of Blackness. I love using oil paint as a nod to masters of paint and their mastery, and using this medium to illustrate stories centering my identity feels like I’m adding Blackness to the art canon.”

“Not feeling like right fit, seeing open calls for artists and knowing they’re not looking for work like mine – that’s something I’ve felt often. Growing up, I didn’t see enough cheesy love movies centered on Black women. Instead, we were often portrayed as the “strong”, “independent”, “angry”, or “jealous” character (thank you, Tyler Perry…). We were rarely the girl who moves to a new city and falls in love. Seeing these narratives growing up made me want to create space for the ditzy Black girl or the dark fantasy thriller where we’re the main characters who don’t die first. I’m so happy to see a big wave of Black representation in horror media and love stories now, and I just hope to add to it – making it bigger, more accessible, and completely normal.”

“As an artist of Kenyan descent, I draw inspiration from the vibrant colors of various Kenyan Tribes and the vast fields and rivers of nature. My art reflects themes of unity and culture, Inspired by Kenya’s history of overcoming colonial powers and uniting diverse tribes. I see Kenya as more than a nation; it is a tapestry of voices and rhythms woven together by a shared desire for connection.

In the same way this story is not exclusive to Kenya, I view the world as a mosaic of tribes and peoples, distinct yet, seeking unity. I aim to capture this harmony, celebrating the richness and importance of diversity while honoring the oneness that binds us. Art is a bridge. A way to remind us that beneath our differences, we are one, vast, interconnected masterpiece.”
